Tulsa is the second-largest city Oklahoma and had a population over 392,000 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area, a region with over 960,000 residents. It is also the county seat of Tulsa County, the most heavily populated county in Oklahoma.

A Brief History

Tulsa was established by the Lochapoka Band of Creek Native American tribe in 1836. For most of the last century, it has been referred to as the “Oil Capital of the World,” with many of the city’s industrial energy buildings being constructed in the Art Deco style of the time. The United States Oil and Gas Association was founded in the city in 1917, six months after the United States’ entry into World War I. Upon its creation, the association provided petroleum to the Allied forces and has since been recognized as a leading advocate for domestic oil production.

Modern-Day Life

Tulsa also boasts an expansive art scene. The Philbrook Museum is frequently considered one of the top 50 fine art museums in the world. The Woody Guthrie Center in the Brady Arts District is the city’s newest museum, having just opened in 2013. For over 40 years, public displays of artwork have been funded by one percent of the annual budget.

Entertainment

For outdoor attractions, Microsoft Game Studios named the Tulsa Zoo “America’s Favorite Zoo” in 2005. The zoo sits on 85 acres and includes 2,600 animals representing 400 species. The incredibly popular Tulsa State Fair attracts more than one million people each fall, and the city’s Oktoberfest was named one of the best in the world by USA Today.

Tulsa is home to the Shock of the WNBA, the Oilers of the ECHL, the Roughnecks FC of the USL and the Drillers of the Texas League. It is also home to the University of Tulsa, Oral Roberts University, and Rogers State University.
